Rafael Montes de Oca (1) Size: Folio (approx. 11.75 x 16 inches)Montes de Oca: "I embarked on this work, intending to portray each species of the many hummingbirds that are present in Mexico, and illustrating not only the male, as I had previously done, but also the female and the young male, when the latter is different from the others; as well as their nests, forming groups with the orchids which are so numerous in this country, attracting attention by the variety of their colours and the capricious forms of their flowers. It is hoped that, apart from adorning the bird illustrations, these latter may ultimately form a complete monograph of these extraordinary plants."The plates are in excellent condition, clean and bright with little evidence of handling. At some time, however, the volume was dropped, causing a little bumping on the right corner of the plates. The bump is not bad and is at considerable distance from the image area. Though cropped in the scans, the plates are whole and complete. Species names appear at the bottom of each print.
