| Prideaux John Selby & Sir William Jardine Birds of Britain These hand-colored lithographs are cut from the first edition of Prideaux John Selby and Sir William Jardine's classic Illustrations of Ornithology, published by Lizars, Edinburgh, 1826-1843. The authors attempted to document and illustrate the many new species that were being discovered abroad and sent back to Britain. As prominent ornithologists, Selby and Jardine had access to birds collected in the British Museum, Linnean Sociey, East India Company, and University of Edinburgh. The plates were based on drawings by Edward Lear, Robert Mitford, James Stewart, as well as Jardine and Selby. The work was issued in two series from 1826-1834 (10 parts), then from 1837-1843 (9 parts). Size: 8.75 x 12 inches |
