The xylographic plates, or wood-engravings,
below are cut from the first and only edition of
William Thomas
Greene's classic
three-volume
Parrots
in Captivity, published by George Bell, London,
1882-87. The parrots were colored by Benjamin Fawcett and based
on drawings by Alexander F. Lydon. W. T. Greene: "In almost every
instance, the plates have breen drawn and colored from life, and are
scarcely to be exceeded in any ornithoglogical work, at least of
a popular character, with which we are acquainted." Size: 9.75 x 6.5 inches |

cut from St. George Mivart's
Monograph of the Lories, or Brush-Tonued Parrots, published by
R. H. Porter, London, in 1896.
These rare plates have mild age toning, more noticeable around the
periphery.
