John  Linden: Lindenia

The chromolithographs below are from one of the great orchid publications of the nineteenth century:  Lindenia: Iconographie des Orchidees, published by John Linden and edited by Lucien Linden and Emile Rodigas, in Ghent between 1885 and 1901 .   Jean Linden (1817-98) was a Belgian nurseryman who organized many expeditions to exotic lands in search novel orchids.   With his son, he founded Iconographie des Orchidees, which appeared in two series, the first between 1885 and 1894 (10 volumes), and the second between 1895 and 1901 (7 volumes).

Note that the only photos below are cropped; the prints themselves have not been trimmed.

The plates below are from the 1884 volume of Lindenia.  Each has some darkening around the periphery.  Age toning on the rest of the plate is mild and more or less even.  In most cases, the outer browning can be matted out, and the print will frame up nicely.
