Botanicals

The hand-colored, copperplate engravings below are cut from Phillip Miller's (1691-1771) classic Figures of the Most Beautiful, Useful, and Uncommon Plants, published in installments between 1755 and 1760..  In 1722, Miller became head gardener of thc Chelsea Physic Garden, whose collection was the largest in Europe.  He was first to show the importance  insects played in fertilizing flowers.  After publishing the Gardener's Dictionary, Miller was elected to the Royal Academy and the Botanical Academy of Florence.  Most of the plates are by Richard Lancake, Georg Dionysius Ehret, and Johann Sebastion Mueller.

In the preface to the work, Miller observes: "In the execution of this work no expense has been spared to render it as perfect as possible. The drawings were taken from living plants, the engravings were most of them done under the author's inspection and the plates have been carefully coloured from the original drawings."

  Size: Approximately 9.75 x 16.25 inches.

A very rare work.
