| Thomas Meehan (1) Native Flowers & Ferns These exquisite chromolithgraphs by Alois Lunzen are cut from Vollumes 1 and 2 of Thomas Meehan's renowned Native Flowers and Ferns of the United States, published by Louis Prang, Boston, 1878-79. These Victorian prints are clean and free of foxing. As is common with this work, there is age toning around the periphery of these plates, most noticeably on left side. Much of the tonig, if not all, can be matted out. The ink is heavy and glossy, so that the figures appear to be hand-painted in oil. Louis Prang is widely regarded as one the pre-eminent American chromolithographers of the late 19th century. Although one might wish that Prang prints aged a little better, the prints below are as good as one might reasonably expect to obtain from Meehan's Native Flowers and Ferns. Size: 10 x 7 inches
Note: The prints are little darker and not quite as luminous as they appear in the scans. |
