Nicolas Martinet (1) Birds: Large Folio Format These remarkable hand-colored copper-engravings are cut from the "grand papier" edition of François Nicolas Martinet's classic Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, 1770-1786. Over the course of his illustrious career, François Nicolas Martinet (1731-1790?) engraved illustrations of birds for some of the most influential naturalists in 18th-century France, including François Salèrne, Mathurin Brisson, and, above all, Georges Louis Leclerc, le comte de Buffon. In the early 1770s, when Buffon could not accommodate his color prints in his natural history, Martinet set out independently to produce his own plates in a collection entitled Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, which was issued in two folio sizes without text (15.25 x 11.25 inches and 12.5 x 18.75 inches) and in octavo with text (8.25 x 5.5 inches). The size of the plates offered below is extremely rare, as is their condition. These plates, printed on hand-made, chain-linked paper, show almost no age toning. The colors are bright and unfaded. Very clean. Page Size: 12.5 x 18.75 inches Plate Impression: 8 X 10 inches |
