The striking hand-colored engravings below are cut primarily from Jane Webb Loudon's celebrated Ladies' Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials, published by William Smith in two volumes between 1843 and 1844 . Lithography by Day and Haghe. A couple prints are cut from The Ladies' Flower Garden of Ornamental Bulbous Plants, published in 1841. And several are cut from British Wild Flowers, published in 1846. Mrs. Loudon began her artistic career to support her husband John Claudius Loudon, a landscape artist whose health and finances were suffering. Perhaps the best of the mid-sized Victorian flower prints, Mrs. Loudon's botanicals are elegantly arranged bouqets of cultivated and wild flowers. Mrs. Loudon's immensely popular prints were largely responsible for making gardening a respectable pursuit for the Victorian gentlewoman. Size: 9 x 11.5 inches |
