Conrad  & George Loddiges (1)
Garden Flowers

George Loddiges (1784-1846) was the son of Conrad Loddiges, a Dutch immigrant who founded a well-known nursery near Hackney, London.  There the Loddiges family supervised the introduction of rare and exotic plants. Conrad Loddiges and Sons were one of the earliest nurseries to cultivate orchids for sale and they continued as the principal commercial orchid cultivators in Europe until the breaking up of their establishment in 1852.  The firm was also noted for his production of camellias, which were introduced in the early 1800's.

The hand-colored engravings below are cut from Loddiges' Botanical Cabinet, Consisting of Coloured Delineations of Plants from All Countries, with a Short Account of Each, Directions for Management, &c., London, John & Arthur Arch, John Hatchard, C. Loddiges & Sons and G. Cooke, published between 1817 and 1833 .  The beautiful engravings are by George Cooke and based on drawings by G. Loddiges, W. Loddiges,  Miss J. Loddiges, G. Cooke, and others.
