Belgian nurseryman Ambroise Verschaffelt founded L’Illustration Horticole: Journal Spécial Des Serres et Des Jardins in 1854. The journal quickly became one of the leading horticultural publications of the mid-19th century under editior Charles Lemaire. In 1870, Jean Jules Linden bought out Verschafffelt and slightly altered the journal's name to L’Illustration Horticole: Revue Mensuelle Des Serres et Des Jardins. The name was changed again in the 1880s to L'Illustration Horticole: Revue Mensuelle Des Plantes Les Plus Remarquables. Émile Rodigas edited the publication from the mid-1880s until 1896, when it merged with Linden's Le Jounal des Orchidées, becoming Le Semaine Horticole.

Note that the Lemaire plates typicall have small binding holes in one of the margins.
