| Edwin Landseer Dogs One of the finest animal painters of all time, Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873) is renowned for his dogs, which often seem to have human qualities. Fabulously successful and greatly beloved by the public, Landseer profited more from selling the rights to his engravings than he did from the actual paintings on which they were based. The steel engravings below come from The Works of Sir Edwin Landseer: Illustrated by Forty-Four Steel Engravings and About Two Hundred Woodcuts from Sketches in the Collection of her Majesty the Queen and Other Sources: With a History of his Art-Life by W. Cosmo Monkhouse. This work was published by George Virtue, London, in 1875 , shortly after Landseer's death and is regarded as one of the finest Victorian-era collections of his work. These gilt-edged plates are printed on very heavy stock, and are very white and clean. Prints are trimmed in the photos only; all titles and plate markings are present. All prints are original. |
