| Anton Kerner von Merilaun Plants in Their Habitat Anton Kerner , Ritter von Marilaun (1831-1898), was the
founder of Alpine Plant Geography and one of the most famous botanists
of his time. He was professor at the University of Innsbruck and
later director of and professor at the Botanical Institute of the
University of Vienna. Kerner was Elected Member of the Austrian
Academy of Sciences. His two beautiful volumes Pflanzenleben (1888-91) were translated into English and became a world
reference in plant ecology. The
chromolithgraphs below come from the
original German publication, with lithography by the famed
Bibliographisches Institut of Leipzig. The majority of plates are
by Ernst Heyn.
