Friedrich Gottlob
Hayne (1)
Medical Botanicals
The
hand-colored copper-engraved plated below are cut
from F. G. Hayne's
(1762-1832) Getreue
Darstellung und
Beschreibung der in der Arzneykunde gebräuchlichen Gewächse,
wie auch solcher, welche mit ihnen verwechselt werden können",
published in Berlin between 1822
and 1827.
The drawings are by Friedric Guimpel.
The hand-made, chain-linked watermarked paper bears the watermark of C
& Honig. The plates are generally bright and clean with very
little, if any, foxing.
Hayne was a German
botanist, pharmacist, and chemist
who, beginning in 1811, taught pharamaceutical botany in Berlin.
He devoted much attention to unknown and little studied plants.
Hayne was friends with Carl L. Willdenow, author of Hortus Berolinensis.
A very rare work.
