Edwards
These hand-colored copper engravings are cut from George Edwards' Natural History of Uncommon Birds, and of Some Other Rare and Undescribed Animals, Quadrupeds, Reptiles, Fishes, Insects, etc., published in London, 1743-1751. The result of twenty years research, this work established Edwards as one of the truly great natural history illustrators. Edwards etched his own plates and, in vignettes, frequently illustrated some aspect of the animal, such as a bird beak, or a phase in its life cycle. Some the plates are dated with Edwards name; some are not. Some of the plates have the animal's name; some do not. All are printed on sturdy, laid paper with only minor age toning.
