Sydenham Edwards (1) Garden Flowers These beautiful hand-colored engravings are cut from Sydenham Teast Edwards' classic Botanical Register: Consisting of Coloured Figures of Exotic Plants, Cultivated in British Gardens, published from 1815 to 1847 by James Ridgeway, London. The plates are by S. Edwards, Miss Drake, M. Hart, W. B. Booth, J. Lindley, and others. These engravings are printed on fine paper and are in uniformly excellent condition. Sydenham
Edwards was
the first full-time artist to work for Curtis's Botanical
Magazine. He served as that magazine's
principal artist for 27 years,
until, following a disagreement in 1815 with John
Sims, Curtis'
successor, he founded his own magazine, the Botanical
Register.
Wilfred Blunt praises Edwards' drawings for
their "remarkable
finish and accuracy" and for their "unlabored
simplicity of execution
[and] clearness of color."
