(1) Ferns of North America The striking chromolithographs below are cut from the first and very rare two-volume edition of Daniel Cady Eaton's classic Ferns of North America, published by Armstrong & Company, Boston, 1880. The plates are in excellent condition, having retained their whiteness except around the outside edges where there is very mild and unobtrusive toning. Daniel Cady Eaton pursued graduate studies under Asa Gray and, at Yale, his alma mater, became one of America's first professors of botany. His library and personal plant collection serve as the nucleus of the Peabody Museum's Herbarium. Eaton's botanical interets led him to Utah in the 1860s, and he contributed to the botany of the United States-Mexican Boundary Survey, Clarence King's Geological Exploration of the 40th Parallel , George Wheeler's Geographical Surveys West of the One Hundreth Meridian, and the Geological Survey of California. |
