a French botanist whose Dictionnaire
Universel d'Histoire Naturelle is a lavishly illustrated survey
of known animals and plants designed to appeal to both academics and
the general public. The illustrations are by some of the best
known artists of the day, including Travies, Oudard, Pretre, and
Susemihl. The work was first published in 1849 by Renard and
Martinet. A second edition appeared in 1861. The plates below
come from both editions.
