| Georges Cuvier Mammals (1) The exquisite hand-colored plates below are cut from the first English edition of Georges Léopole Chrétien Frédéric Dagobert, Baron Cuvier's classic Animal Kingdom: Arranged in Conformity with Its Organization . . . With Additional Descriptions of All the Species Hitherto Named, and of Many not before Noticed, editied by Edward Griffith et al and printed for George B. Whittaker, London (1827-35) . [Originally published in French in 1817 as Le Règne animal destribué d'après son organisation.] This work was the "most influential exposition of the typological approach to animal classification, representing the greatest body of zoological facts that had yet been assembled; it served as the standard zoological manual formost of Europe during the first half of the nineteenth century" (Norman Library). The plates are printed on fine, very white India paper and have minimal age toning. All plates are dated between 1824 and 1830. Size: 9.25 x 5.75 inches. |
