excellent condition, but the binding strip on the double-page plates
shows through, slightly darkening the fold at center. The double
plates are printed on a single sheet of paper, not separated as the
photos might suggest. The prints are whole and intact, trimmed in the

The Challenger
Expedition is the most famous oceanographic expedition of all
time. Under the command of George Nares, HMS Challenger set out
in
December, 1872, on a three-year voyage with the mission of exploring
the structure and physical composition of the world's ocean beds
and determining the temperature and direction of deep-sea
currents.
In addition, biologists were charged with cataloguing the flora and
fauna they encountered. By the end of the voyage, the Challenger
had taken hundreds of soundings and traversed more than 68,000 nautical
miles |
