Challenger Expedition
Deep-Sea Fish

These black and white
lithographs are cut from the massive Report on the Scientific Results of the Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger During the Years 1873-76 Under the Command of Captain George S. Nares, R.N., F.R.S. and the Late Captain Frank Tourle Thomson, R.N. Prepared under the Superintendence of the Late Sir C. Wyville Thomson, 1885-1895 .  Most of these lithographs are by R. Mintern.

These lithographs are in excellent condition, but the binding strip on the double-page plates shows through, slightly darkening the fold at center.  The double plates are printed on a single sheet of paper, not separated as the photos might suggest.  The prints are whole and intact, trimmed in the photos only.

Size: 9.5 x 12.5 inches

The Challenger Expedition is the most famous oceanographic expedition of all time.  Under the command of George Nares, HMS Challenger set out in December, 1872, on a three-year voyage with the mission of exploring the structure and physical composition of the world's ocean beds and determining the temperature and direction of deep-sea currents.  In addition, biologists were charged with cataloguing the flora and fauna they encountered.  By the end of the voyage, the Challenger had taken hundreds of soundings and traversed more than 68,000 nautical miles

The results of the expedition-- published in 50 volumes--were described by Sir John Murray as the "greatest advance in the knowledge of our planet since the  celebrated discoveries of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries."  Besides mapping  the ocean floor and showing the existence of such features as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and Mariana Trench, the expedition discovered 715 new genera and 4,717 new species of ocean life forms, many of which were found at unheard of depths.
