| Nathaniel Lord Britton Joseph Nelson Rose Cacti The
chromolithographs below are by Mary
Emily Eaton
and are cut from the first edition of Nathaniel
L. Britton and Joseph
N. Rose's
classic four-volume Cactaceae:
Descriptions
and Illustrations of Plants of the Cactus Family,
published by
the Carnegie Institute, Washington, 1919-1923.
The
lithography is by A. Hoen & Co of Baltimore. The
plates show light,
even age toning, so they have an ivory cast and are
not quite as bright
as the photos suggest. Britton and Rose selected
Mary
Emily Eaton (1873-1961) as the illustrator for their
magnum opus.
Trained as an artist in England, Eaton served as
principal artist
for the New York Botanical Garden, illustrating the Addisonia.
She also did illustations for the National
Geographic
Magazine and Contributions from the US
National Herbarium. Size: 9 x 11.5
