Marcus E. Bloch

The hand-colored copperplate engravings below are cut from Marcus Elieser Bloch's  (1723-1799) classic nine-volume Okonomische Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Auslandischen Fische, published in Berlin, 1783-1787.  This work, an extension of his three-volume study of German fish.  The drawings were done chiefly by Johan Friedrich August Krueger and Joahn Friedrich Henning.  The "Natural History of Foreign Fish" is widely regarded as containing the finest ichthyological plates ever produced.  

The prints are on thick chain-lined paper with strong impression marks. Species names are given in Latin, German, French, and occasionally English.All plate markings are present but may be cropped in the photos.  The plates are very clean.
