These hand-colored engravings are cut from Elizabeth Blackwell's classic Herbarium Blackwellianum Emendatum Et Auctum, Id Est Elisabethae Blackwell Collectio Stirpium Quae in Pharmacopoliis ad Medicum Usum Asservantur . . . Cum Praefatione C. J. Trew, published in Nuremberg, 1757-73.  The engravings are by N. F. Eisenberger.  The paper is hand made and chainlinked.  This German publication is a re-issue of Blackwell's A Curious Herbal (1737-39), originally undertaken with the aim of raising enough money to secure the release of her husband from debtor's prison.  Though her work was immensely popular and she succeeded in paying off her husband's debts, he was later beheaded in Sweden for political intrigue.
