Apples of New York


The colored photo-engravings below are cut from S. A. Beach's classic two-volume Apples of New York (Report of the New York Agricultural Experiment Station for the Year 1903), published by J. H. Lyon, Albany, 1905.  Of the 1000 varieties of apples described by Beach a hundred years ago, many remain popular today, while many others have acquired "heritage" status.   The plates, which verge on the surreal, are printed on semi-glossy stock which has retained its whiteness over time.
